Chapter 02

Optimize your Google Business Profile with AI in 30 minutes

Most restaurants leave their Google Business Profile half-empty. Here's a one-pass AI workflow to fix description, services, posts, and Q&A.

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single highest-leverage marketing surface you own as a restaurant. It outranks your website on most “near me” searches. And yet the average restaurant fills out maybe 40% of it. Here’s how to close that gap in 30 minutes with AI.

Why GBP matters more than your website

Most diners never visit your website. They search “thai food near me” or “open now brunch downtown”, scan the map results, and pick. Three things drive that pick:

  1. Photos. First impression.
  2. Stars + review count. Social proof.
  3. The 750-character description. Your only chance to differentiate.

You can’t fake the photos with AI. You can absolutely use AI for the description, the services list, the Q&A, and weekly Posts.

The 30-minute pass

Block 30 uninterrupted minutes. Open GBP in one tab, ChatGPT in another. Run these four steps in order.

1. The description (10 min)

Most descriptions are autopilot (“we serve delicious food in a friendly atmosphere”). Yours can do better.

Run this once. Read it out loud. If a sentence feels generic, ask the AI to rewrite that one line, not the whole thing.

2. Services & menu items (8 min)

GBP lets you list specific dishes/services with prices. Most owners skip this. Don’t.

3. Q&A seeding (7 min)

GBP has a “Questions & Answers” section. Anyone can ask, and the answers show in search. If you don’t seed it, random people fill it with wrong info.

Then post each Q&A from your owner account so it’s marked verified.

4. Two scheduled Posts (5 min)

GBP Posts expire after 7 days but factor into local ranking. One per week is plenty.

What to do (and not do) after

  • Update photos quarterly. AI can’t help here — you need fresh shots.
  • Reply to every review. See our review-reply playbook.
  • Don’t keyword-stuff. “Best Italian Italian restaurant Italian food in Italian” gets you suspended.
  • Re-run the description every 6 months when seasons or menu change meaningfully.

What to expect

Restaurants that complete their GBP fully see local-pack ranking improvements within 2–4 weeks, especially in less-saturated cuisines or neighborhoods. The bigger lift is conversion: a fully filled-out profile converts roughly twice as well as a half-empty one for the same impressions.

That’s the pitch. Thirty minutes today, dividends for years.
